IPD: the measurement that quietly decides display-glasses sharpness

Interpupillary distance — the space between your pupils — determines whether your eyes sit on the optical axis of fixed-optic display glasses. Mismatch it and the centers stay sharp while edges smear, and no prescription fixes it.

Two people with identical prescriptions can look through the same pair of display glasses and see completely different pictures — one crisp edge-to-edge, the other smeared at the sides and headachy within the hour. The variable between them is IPD, and it's the least-discussed number in a market that loves discussing numbers. It's printed on VR headsets' adjustment dials and omitted from most glasses spec sheets; this guide puts it back where it belongs — in your buying decision.

01What IPD is — and what it isn't

IPDtypical adult range: 56–74 mm · average ≈ 63 mmtoo far outside the glasses' range → edge blur, ghosting, eye strainRL
Interpupillary distance (IPD) is the distance between your pupils, in millimeters. Fixed-optic glasses have a supported range — matching it is the single biggest driver of edge-to-edge sharpness.

IPD is pure geometry: the distance between your pupils, in millimeters. Adult values commonly cluster between 56 and 74 mm, with population averages around 63; OWNER REPORTS women's averages run a few millimeters smaller than men's on commonly cited population charts, and values outside the 58–70 band are common enough to matter in a mass product. What IPD is not: a vision problem, a prescription item, or anything correctable. It's a facial measurement — like shoe size, it just needs to match the product.

02Why fixed-optic glasses care so much

Binocular display glasses project two images that your brain fuses into one. The optics are ground and aligned for a specific eye position: light leaving the center of each lens module is collimated toward a nominal pupil location. Sit your pupils on that axis and the whole field renders through the optical sweet zone; sit off-axis and the periphery degrades first — the classic “blurry corners” complaint that fills r/Xreal and r/VITURE threads. OWNER REPORTS

VR headsets solved this decades ago with physical IPD sliders (move the panels to match your eyes). Display glasses mostly can't: the birdbath optics and panels are fixed inside a frame that must stay light, so manufacturers design for a supported IPD range and users self-select by fit. Some nose-bridge adjustments shift the vertical axis, but horizontal IPD matching is fixed by design. The industry's quiet acknowledgment: XREAL sells the One Pro in two IPD sizes, and VITURE sizes its Luma line Regular versus Large — buy-by-IPD is arriving, which tells you how much the number matters. OUR ANALYSIS — manufacturers rarely publish nominal ranges; where we cite bands, they synthesize spec fragments and owner consensus. Verify with the brand for edge cases. The pattern worth internalizing: wider-FOV flagships are more IPD-sensitive (peripheral light paths are longer), which is exactly why the One Pro went two-size.

04How to measure your IPD

  1. The authoritative way: ask during an eye exam — optometrists measure IPD for every eyeglass order, and will tell you (or write it on your prescription) for free.
  2. The paperwork way: check your last glasses order or optical fitting sheet; PD/IPD is routinely recorded there.
  3. The mirror way: hold a millimeter ruler against your brow, align 0 over the center of your left pupil, and — looking at your right pupil in the mirror, not the ruler — read the value. Repeat three times; take the average. (Focusing on the ruler shifts your eyes inward and lowballs the measurement.)
  4. The friend way: have someone hold the ruler and measure pupil-to-pupil while you gaze at a distant object — converging on a near target shrinks your effective IPD by 1–3 mm.

Measure to the half-millimeter if you can; between 62 and 64, nearly everything fits. Commonly cited fit thresholds put model selection pressure below 58 or above 71, OWNER REPORTSand where the One Pro's sizing and VITURE's Large frames earn their price.

05Mismatch symptoms and what to do about them

The signature of IPD mismatch: sharp center, degrading edges, fastest eye fatigue you've ever had — distinguishable from prescription blur (uniform softness, fixed by correction) and astigmatism (directional smear, squint-responsive). If you experience it: measure your IPD first, before blaming the unit; confirm against the model's fit band; and if you're outside it, the fixes are structural — size-correct models (One Pro M/L, Luma Large), models with per-eye adjustment for what they can adjust, or returning within the window for a better-fitting brand. No insert corrects IPD misalignment (inserts correct your lens power, not the glasses' geometry), which is why mismatch returns are legitimate returns.

Measure once, buy right forever

IPD takes two minutes to measure and lives in your notes app forever, next to your shoe size. Get the number before you shop, treat it as a hard filter alongside budget and FOV, and prefer brands that publish or size for it — companies that acknowledge IPD are companies that thought about your face, not just their optics.

Frequently asked questions

What is IPD and why does it matter for smart glasses?
IPD (interpupillary distance) is the distance between your pupils in millimeters — commonly reported adult values fall in the 56–74 range, with population averages around 63. Display glasses have fixed optical axes sized for particular IPD ranges. If your IPD falls outside a model's supported range, you view the panels off-axis: the image center stays sharp while edges blur, ghost, or strain your eyes — symptoms that look like a defective unit or a wrong prescription. (Source tier noted in the IPD ranges section below.)
Which smart glasses support the widest IPD range?
XREAL sells the One Pro in two sizes — M for 57-66 mm and L for 66-75 mm — the most explicit IPD accommodation in tethered glasses. VITURE's Luma line ships Regular (up to 70 mm) and Large sizes. Models with diopter dials (VITURE Pro 2, Rokid Max 2) adjust focus per eye but not optical alignment. Most fixed models target roughly 58-70 mm without stating it.
How do I measure my IPD for smart glasses?
Four ways, most to least accurate: ask your optometrist during an eye exam (they measure it for every glasses order); check your last eyeglass fitting or order paperwork; measure yourself in a mirror with a millimeter ruler (align 0 over one pupil, read the value over the other, looking at your own eyes); or use a friend and a ruler held steady. Measure 2-3 times and average.
